AI in Pittsburgh: Where Artificial Intelligence Gets Built

In the 1960s, Carnegie Mellon University researchers Herbert Simon and Allen Newell created the first artificial intelligence programs, effectively founding the field. That head start has never faded. Today, CMU ranks #1 in the United States for graduate AI programs according to U.S. News & World Report, and the University of Pittsburgh has launched its Hub for AI and Data Science Leadership (HAIL) to advance AI research and responsible adoption across disciplines.

The North Side houses the Space Innovation District. And Hazelwood Green, a former steel mill site south of downtown, is being transformed into an advanced manufacturing and research campus purpose-built for AI-era industry.

Governor Shapiro's AI Initiative — Pennsylvania ran a yearlong pilot with 150 state employees using generative AI, reporting average time savings of 105 minutes per day. Shapiro signed an executive order at CMU outlining responsible AI standards for government.

CoreWeave, Blackstone, and other major players are investing in data center infrastructure powered by the region's abundant natural gas, water, and legacy energy grid.

At the startup level, Pittsburgh AI companies have raised significant recent rounds: Abridge ($5.3B valuation), Skild AI ($300M Series B), Gecko Robotics ($125M, $1B+ valuation), and Gather AI ($40M Series B). Regional venture firms like Magarac Venture Partners are actively funding the next wave of AI startups.

The investment thesis is straightforward: Pittsburgh offers world-class AI talent from CMU and Pitt, affordable real estate and cost of living compared to Silicon Valley, abundant energy resources for AI compute, and a collaborative ecosystem where startups, corporations, universities, and government work in close proximity.
